John Lee Hooker passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning (June 21st). There is no further information available at the moment and we will communicate any update with regard to any services that might be open to the public on our web-site, www.rosebudus.com, as soon as that information is available.

John Lee Hooker, the greatest of all bluesmen passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning (June 21) at his home in the San Francisco Bay area, at the age of 83. Hooker influenced countless generations of musicians and inspired music fans around the world during his sixty year career. He was loved dearly by millions and we will all miss him greatly. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced shortly. We thank everyone for their kind wishes and condolences.

John Lee Hooker Biography Out October 17 in US via St. Martin's Press

Boogie Man, The Adventures of John Lee Hooker In The Twentieth Century, is out October 17 in the US via St. Martin's Press. Charles Shaar Murray's book is the first ever biography on Hooker. The book has already received rave reviews in the UK where it was released last Fall. Murray was previously awarded the Ralph Gleason award for Crosstown Traffic, his acclaimed study of Jimi Hendrix.

The 90 minute piece has been developed over the past few years by Kick Films working with John Lee Hooker, his family and friends in concert and interviews. B B King, Ben Harper, John Lee Hooker, and Robert Cray are interviewed and vintage as well as recent footage of John Lee performances and videos will be shown. The program airs at 10:00 pm on the East Coast and 7:00 Pacific and the show will repeat three hours following it's first airing.


John Lee Hooker Cancelled Dates

John Lee Hooker's Doctors have discovered a vascular condition that may require surgery. Further tests are being conducted and a determination should be made soon as to whether or not an operation will be necessary. In the meantime, dates requiring extensive travel have been cancelled. These include the following: Atlanta (June 24), Montreal (July 7) and Ottawa (July (9). We will update Mr. Hooker's progress as we have more information to impart.

John Lee Hooker's doctors have found a vascular condition that may require surgery and will require Mr. Hooker to cancel at least the next two months of engagements through mid - June. Mr. Hooker is otherwise doing fine and hopes to return to a healthy touring schedule this Summer.

Grammys Honor John Lee Hooker with Lifetime Achievement Award

John Lee Hooker has been chosen, along with Woody Guthrie, Harry Belafonte and Willie Nelson, to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (The Grammys). The award ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 22 with additional acknowledgement during the Grammy Awards on February 23.

The John Lee Hooker biography, "Boogie Man: John Lee Hooker In The American 20th Century," penned by noted author Charles Shaar Murray, was released October 15 in England. The first biography of the legendary bluesman, "Boogie Man", was serialized upon release in London's Daily Telegraph and featured in a seven page spread in Mojo Magazine's November issue. Watch for release in other parts of the world in early 2000.


John Lee Hooker closes the 1999 San Francisco Blues Festival with surprise performances by Carlos Santana and Pinetop Perkins

Riding high with his current hit record, Carlos Santana joined John Lee Hooker as he closed the San Francisco Blues Festival with his signature Boogie. Santana had come empty handed but was given John Lee's guitar - the same guitar originally given to Hooker years earlier by Santana himself. Also joining Hooker for the finale was Muddy Waters alumnus and old friend, Pinetop Perkins, on piano.

Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt presented John Lee Hooker with a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of The Rhythm & Blues Foundation on Thursday February 26 in Los Angeles. The presentation was followed by Raitt and Hooker reprising their Grammy winning performance of Hooker's ""I'm In The Mood". The two were then joined by Eric Clapton, Maceo Parker, Keb Mo, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Larry Graham, Hubert Sumlin and others for an all star finale on Hooker's "Boogie Chillun". The show also included awards to Patti LaBelle and The Bluebelles, Isaac Hayes, Ashford & Simpson and many more.

Ken Baker, Saxophonist with John Lee Hooker Passes - February 8, 1999

Ken Baker who played saxophone with John Lee Hooker for the past 16 years passed away February 8, 1998. Ken also toured with Sista Monica and had previously performed with Robben Ford and Jimmy Witherspoon among many others. Loved by all who knew him, a celebration of his life was held in San Jose on February 20 attended by an overflow crowd of family, Bay Area musicians and friends.
