Downbeat Critics Mainly Love The Bad Plus

The Bad Plus continue to stir up controversy in the jazz world but the 2004 Downbeat Critics Poll shows them ranking individually and collectively as among the very best in jazz. The August Downbeat dedicates an entire column to musician comments about the group and their abrupt rise to fame / notoriety in the jazz world. Later in the magazine comes the critics poll in which the band was named #1 Rising Star Acoustic Group. Individual members also ranked in the following categories; Pianist, Ethan Iverson ranked in the top vote getters as Rising Star Arranger, Rising Star Composer and Rising Star Piano. Bassist Reid Anderson was named as a Rising Star Bass, and drummer, Dave King as Rising Star Drums. Rosebud Artists Charlie Musselwhite and Marcia Ball also ranked among the best blues artists.


Mavis Staples to Perform At Democratic National Convention

Mavis Staples will sing "America The Beautiful" to open the prime time session of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, July 29 in Boston, MA. This is the final night of the four day convention when Senator John Kerry is officially nominated as the Democratic candidate for President of the United States. In addition to the television exposure, an expected 35,000 people will attend the convention including 6,000 delegates; 15,000 members of the media, area dignitaries, diplomats, and foreign honored guests. Mavis is one of only a select few entertainers who have been invited to perform at the convention. Watch for a considerably heightened profile for Mavis this Fall in the wake of her new Alligator Records CD release, "Have A Little Faith", set for August 17 as well as extensive tour dates to follow.
