Robert Cray to co-host W.C. Handy Awards with Ruth Brown

Robert Cray has accepted an invitation to co-host the W.C. Handy Awards on April 30 in Memphis with Ruth Brown. Cray co-hosted the show in1993 with Delbert McClinton and Cray himself was the first artist to truly sweep the awards back in 1984 when he won for Best Contemporary Male Blues Vocalist, Best Contemporary Album (Bad Influence), Single of the Year (Phone Booth / Got To Make A Comeback) and Song of the Year (Phone Booth).


Big Head Todd & The Monsters with John Lee Hooker bring "Boom Boom" back to life again

Big Head Todd & The Monsters' version of the John Lee Hooker classic, "Boom Boom", featuring John Lee himself on vocals brings the song back to the charts once again. Originally a hit for John Lee and later a hit for The Animals, Hooker re-recorded the song in 1992 with Jimmie Vaughan for Hooker's album of the same name. The record was a hit in Europe where it was tied to a Lee Jeans campaign across the continent.


Luther Allison receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Washington Blues Society honored the lateLuther Allison with their most prestigious award, the lifetime achievement award, at it's annual B.B. Awards in Seattle on March 15. Earlier in the evening, Luther also won the "Best National Recording" award for his 1997 CD "Reckless."


Luther Allison wins Orville H Gibson Award for Best Male Blues Guitarist

The late Luther Allison was honored during Grammy Week in New York (Luther's Reckless CD was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Recording) with the Orville H Gibson Award for Best Male Blues Guitarist. On hand for the event were manager Miki Mulvehill and life partner Rocky Brown.

Geno Delafose & French Rockin' Boogie are nominated for Best Zydeco Artist and BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet were nominated for Best Cajun Group in the 1998 Big Easy Awards to be held on Monday April 20th in New Orleans.


Charles Brown featured on the cover of Blues Revue's April issue

Charles Brown is featured on the cover of the April Blues Revue magazine with extensive coverage inside. In addition to the feature on Charles, his esteemed sidepersons, Danny Caron and Ruth Davies also score features in the issue. In addition to their work with Charles, Danny and Ruth played on John Lee Hooker's most recent double Grammy winning CD, Don't Look Back, produced by Van Morrison.


John Lee Hooker's "Mama You Got A Daughter" in City Of Angels soundtrack

"Mama You Got A Daughter," which John Lee recorded for Vee Jay records in 1958, appears in the film, 'City Of Angels,' starring Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. The song is also on the Warner Bros. soundtrack album, which contains new recordings by Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morrisette, and U2.
