Charles Brown Given First Class "Homegoing"

Charles Brown's life was celebrated in what Solomon Burke declared as his "Homegoing" on January 30, 1999. Burke presided over the Los Angeles ceremony for Charles Brown that included a letter from Bill and Hillary Clinton read by Mary Steenburgen (who had introduced Charles to the first couple at her wedding), remembrances, a poem, and songs by his dear friends Ruth Brown, Bonnie Raitt, Reverend Dr. Charles Davis, Ernie Andrews, Sonny Craver, Mel Carter, Clora Bryant, Danny Caron, Little Jimmy Scott and an uproarious tribute from Little Richard.


R & B Foundation Honors John Lee Hooker With Lifetime Achievement Award

Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt presented John Lee Hooker with a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of The Rhythm & Blues Foundation on Thursday February 26 in Los Angeles. The presentation was followed by Raitt and Hooker reprising their Grammy winning performance of Hooker's ""I'm In The Mood". The two were then joined by Eric Clapton, Maceo Parker, Keb Mo, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Larry Graham, Hubert Sumlin and others for an all star finale on Hooker's "Boogie Chillun". The show also included awards to Patti LaBelle and The Bluebelles, Isaac Hayes, Ashford & Simpson and many more.


Rosebud Artists' Songs Honored by Grammys With Hall of Fame Induction

New Song Entries into the Grammys Hall of Fame included a number of Rosebud Artists' Songs Including the following:

Booker T. Jones was represented as songwriter and group leader for

Charlie Musselwhite On Blues Revue Cover, In Hendrix Film, New CD

The April issue of Blues Revue features Charlie Musselwhite on the cover with an extensive story inside. In the same issue, Charlie features heavily in Bob Vorel's editorial and Art Tipaldi's feature on blues artists who have taken the clean and sober route. Charlie's new pointblank/Virgin CD, Continental Drifter, featuring members of his favorite Cuban group, Quarteto Patria, is due for release April 20. Charlie is also seen in the D.A.Pennebaker Film and Video, "Searching For Jimi Hendrix".


BeauSoleil Scores Billboard Cover Story, New CD March 16

BeauSoleil was featured on the cover of Billboard's February 27 issue in a Jim Bessman story about their upcoming Rhino CD, Cajunization. Cajunization is in stores March 16 and, according to Bessman, features the band broadening their horizons with tastes of Cuban, blues, Hawaiian and even surf music while still never straying too far from their source. Jerry Douglas and Sonny Landreth guest on the CD.


Ken Baker, Saxophonist with John Lee Hooker Passes - February 8, 1999

Ken Baker who played saxophone with John Lee Hooker for the past 16 years passed away February 8, 1998. Ken also toured with Sista Monica and had previously performed with Robben Ford and Jimmy Witherspoon among many others. Loved by all who knew him, a celebration of his life was held in San Jose on February 20 attended by an overflow crowd of family, Bay Area musicians and friends.
