Tommy Castro, Bettye LaVette and the late great Muddy Waters took home top awards at The Blues Foundations prestigious Blues Music Awards last night (May 8) in Tunica, Mississippi. Tommy Castro won big with his first two Blues Music Awards, honored with the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award and also for Best Contemporary Blues Album for his most recent CD, Painkiller. Bettye LaVette was recognized as Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist, her second Blues Music Award. Former Rosebud artist, the late Muddy Waters, won Best Historical Album for Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down, an album of previously unreleased recordings with Johnny Winter and James Cotton. Rosebud artists Duke Robillard and Ruthie Foster also received nominations this year. The Blues Music Awards are the highest recognition in the blues world, often touted as the Grammys of the Blues. The Tommy Castro Band is featured as the driving force and core band on the new CD, Command Performance, a live recording drawn from performances on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues cruise as well as from the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue Tour in Fall 2007. Tommys first live release in 8 years, the album features Deanna Bogart, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Magic Dick with special guests Marcia Ball, Elvin Bishop and Curtis Salgado. Tommy Castro today received Album of the Year accolades from BluesWax, the largest subscribed Blues publication in the world for his latest album success, Painkiller. This is the fourth BluesWax Award for Castro, having also won Artist of the Year in 2002 and 2006 and Album of the Year in 2003. Castro has the distinction of being the first two-time BluesWax Album of the Year Award winner. Painkiller is also nominated for a 2008 Blues Music Award as "Contemporary Blues Album of the Year" and Castro is a nominee for "B.B. King Entertainer of the Year." Duke Robillards World Full of Blues (Stony Plain Records) and Tommy Castros Painkiller (Blind Pig) were voted among the Top 10 CDs of 2007 by House of Blues Radio Hour listeners. The January 7th and 8th House of Blues Radio hour featured Robilards "World Of Blues" and Castros "I Roll When I Rock." Tommy Castros "Soul Shaker" was also featured on the International Blues Challenge segment on January 19th and 20th in honor of his past win. House of Blues Radio Hour is hosted weekly by Dan Akroyd. Bettye LaVettes incredible year (Grammy nomination, Pollstar magazine cover story and topping many Best Of 2007 lists) continues with three nominations for Album of the Year (Scene Of The Crime), Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Tommy Castro grabs two nominations for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year (Painkiller) and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Duke Robillard yet again receives a nod for Best Instrumentalist - Guitar. Robillard has won this award an unprecedented four previous times. Ruthie Foster scores her first nomination for Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year. Bill Frisell was named Best Guitarist for the fourth year in a row (and seventh in 10 years) in Downbeat's Critics Poll. Several frequent Frisell collaborators were also honored: Sam Yahel was on top in the Rising Star Organ category and Jenny Scheinman was named #1 Rising Star Violin, while producer (and Frisell manager) Lee Townsend, drummers Brian Blade and Joey Baron, and violinist Eyvind Kang were among the honorees in their respective categories. Bettye LaVette and Charlie Musselwhite both placed in the top 10 for Blues Artist/Group, and Tommy Castro was among the Rising Star Blues Artist/Group honorees. The Blues Album category included JJ Cale & Eric Claptons "The Road To Escondido" as well as Musselwhites "Delta Hardware". Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaints "The River In Reverse" and Richard Thompsons "The Life And Music Of Richard Thompson" were honored in the Beyond Album category. Congratulations to all the honorees!
Tommy Castro just won BluesWax Blues Artist of the Year 2006 with a record number of first place reader votes. Meanwhile his new CD, Painkiller, is charting on the Billboard Blues Charts. BluesWax is a weekly internet publication with nearly 100,000 subscribers. Publisher Chip Eagle said, "I love Tommy Castro and I'm very happy our readers selected him. There are few artists as deserving as he is. He gives everything to his fans, never puts on a bad show, and has one of the best blues bands in the world." Tommy just finished headlining the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue tour with guests Ronnie Baker Brooks, Deanna Bogart, and Magic Dick with more dates to come. The package is named after the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise which sails the Caribbean every January.
Tommy Castro will release his new CD, Painkiller on January 30. The album features nine new Tommy Castro original songs with Tommy and the band sharing the spotlight with special guests Coco Montoya, Angela Strehli, David Maxwell and Teresa James. The CD was produced by John Porter, who has previously spearheaded projects with Santana, Los Lonely Boys, B.B. King, Elvis Costello and Keb Mo. Painkiller is the follow up CD to Soul Shaker, which spent 19 weeks in the Billboard Blues Charts and was nominated for a Blues Music Award. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's office has announced that October 14th will be declared "Tommy Castro Day" in recognition of his support of various community projects as well as his musical achievements. A representative of the Mayors Office will present Tommy with the Mayor's Proclamation at his show at Slim's on October 14th. Tommy Castro will also be honored by the North Beach Chamber of Commerce who will have his image painted onto a building-wide mural at the intersection of Broadway and Columbus Streets. Tommy started his career by playing in the clubs in North Beach and the mural features cultural icons and heroes from that storied neighborhood's illustrious history.
The Blues Foundation announced their annual Blues Music Awards (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards) last night and, once again, Rosebud artists were well represented. Marica Ball was honored with her third award in as many years when she was named Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year. Mavis Staples was honored as Soul/Blues Female Artist of the year for the second year in a row. Charlie Musselwhite picked up the award for Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica for the 13th time in his career, bringing his total Blues Foundation awards to 19. The awards ceremony also featured Blues Music Award nominee and Rosebud artist Tommy Castro who performed along with Kim Wilson and Elvin Bishop. The Blues Music Awards are the highest honor in the blues world, an event often touted as the Grammys of the Blues. Thank you to the Blues Foundation, all the fans and congratulations to all the artists for another great year of keeping the blues alive.

Rosebud Artists scored 13 nominations for the Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards. Marcia Ball is tied for most nominated artist overall this year with four nominations including Entertainer of the Year, Contemporary Blues Album of the Year, Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and Piano Player of the Year. Tommy Castro makes his first appearance in the Blues Music Awards with nominations for both Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year for his album Soul Shaker. Bettye LaVette was honored with a nomination for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year for the third year in a row, as well as a nod for Soul Blues Album of the Year for her album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise. Last year's big winners Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite were nominated again for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year and Instrumentalist - Harmonica, respectively. John Hammond's album, In Your Arms Again, was awarded a nomination for Best Acoustic Album of the Year. Robert Cray's song "Twenty" was honored with a nomination for Song of the Year and the late Muddy Waters rounds out the Rosebud Agency honors with a nomination for Historical Album of the Year for the Album Hoochie Coochie Man: The Complete Chess Recordings, Volume 2, 1952 - 1958.
The year end "Best of" lists have begun again and Bettye LaVette, Duke Robillard and Tommy Castro are among those honored so far. Bettye LaVette's album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise garnered the #2 spot in the R&B/Soul category and #59 overall in Amazon's annual "Editor's Picks" list. Tommy Castro was honored with a Leadership Award by The Portuguese American Leadership Council of the US (PALCUS) at a gala ceremony in Newark, NJ on November 12, 2005. PALCUS is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC whose mission is to address the concerns of the Portuguese-American community. The Leadership Award is given to Portuguese-Americans who have achieved success in their chosen field. Tommy Castro, currently on tour to support his new DVD Whole Lotta Soul and CD Soul Shaker, was honored to receive the award.
Tommy Castro celebrates the release of his Soul Shaker (Blind Pig) CD with an appearance on the cover of Blues Revue. The CD has enjoyed an extensive run on the Billboard Blues chart and the band, as usual is touring extensively in support of the new CD.

Tommy Castro to join B.B. King Summer Blues Festival Tour Tommy Castro, one of the newest members of the Rosebud Agency, will join B.B. King as a featured act on his annual, traveling, summer Blues Festival. These dates supplement a full scale tour already in play in support of Tommy's latest Blind Pig release, Live at the Fillmore. Tommy Castro will release his first live CD, Live At the Fillmore on Blind Pig Records on February 22. The project will be available on Enhanced CD, VHS, DVD. In addition to Tommy's road band, Jimmy Pugh, keyboardist for The Robert Cray Band and former producer for Tommy, is featured on the CD.
Blues Revue Readers Choose Rosebud Artists' CDs Among All Time Favorites Blues Revue Magazine conducted a poll of it's readers to name their 10 favorite Blues records of all time and (9) of the top (40) were recordings by present and former Rosebud Agency artists.
Blues Agent of The Year, Tom Gold, Joins Rosebud Tom Gold, owner of The Tom Gold Agency, has joined The Rosebud Agency along with his top two artists, Tommy Castro and Coco Montoya. Tom has just been named Agent of the year by the Blues Foundation in conjunction with their Keeping The Blues Alive Awards. Tom will focus on booking East Coast accounts as well as casinos, fairs and special events nationwide. He will also continue to service dates for Tommy Castro and Coco Montoya on the West Coast. Tommy and Coco both plan to tour extensively behind their new CD releases coming February 22 and January 25 respectively.
