Pops Staples, John Lee Hooker to receive Lifetime Achievement Awards Pops Staples has been named to receive The Lifetime Achievement Award from The Mississippi Arts Commission, in cooperation with the Governor's Office of Mississippi. The award will be presented by the governor and First Lady in March at the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson. Past winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Morgan Freeman, Leontyne Price, Eudora Welty, Ethel Wright Mohamed, Margaret Walker Alexander and Shelby Foote. The Rhythm and Blues Foundation will honor John Lee Hooker with their 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award on February 25 at the foundation's annual gala at Sony Studios in Los Angeles, the day after the Grammy Awards. John Lee Hooker house fire Many may have heard about the fire that broke out in Mr. Hooker s Los Altos home in the news or other sources, but we wanted to update those who visit the site. John Lee Hooker's house sustained significant damage after a fire broke out in one of the bedrooms on Sunday, July 26. John Lee and his guitars were unharmed and he is carrying on with his schedule as usual. As John Lee put it "It's a shame so many things got burned but you can buy things and you can't buy life - everybody came out safe and that's what's important. These things happen". John Lee Hooker's 1st Canadian date in almost five years an advance sellout After performing as co-headliner with The Robert Cray Band July 11 at The Pier in Seattle, Hooker travels North to Canada for the first time in nearly five years. The July 13 date at The Rage in Vancouver sold out quickly as Hooker makes this rare appearance outside the United States. The Dirty Dozen is set to open the show. Hooker has gone into semi-retirement with regard to touring but you'll be hearing more from him soon. His newest CD, The Best of Friends, is set for release October 20. John Lee Hooker A Double Grammy Winner
Rosebud's best year ever capped by six Grammy Nominations--John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, the late Luther Allison, Charlie Musselwhite and BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet score Grammy Nominations. The late Luther Allison was honored with a Grammy Nomination in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category for his Reckless CD. Allison passed away in August after being diagnosed with cancer while on tour in support of the CD. He was widely recognized as the fastest rising star in the blues world having swept the W.C. Handy Awards two years running and being featured on the covers of every major blues magazine. John Lee Hooker scored two Grammy Nominations for his current CD, Don't Look Back. The CD was nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album while his duet with Van Morrison on the title track earned a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. BeauSoleil snared their eighth Grammy Nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album for their L'Amour Ou La Folie CD. Robert Cray kept his streak alive with his tenth Grammy Nomination, this time for Sweet Potato Pie and it's nomination as Best Contemporary Blues Album. Each of Robert's last eight projects has been nominated for a Grammy and he's won four to date. Charlie Musselwhite's latest, Rough News, proved to be good news after all, scoring him a nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album. Duke Robillard played guitar on two prominent Grammy nominated projects, R&B=Ruth Brown and Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind. |
