Tommy Castro, Bettye LaVette and the late great Muddy Waters took home top awards at The Blues Foundation’s prestigious Blues Music Awards last night (May 8) in Tunica, Mississippi. Tommy Castro won big with his first two Blues Music Awards, honored with the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award and also for Best Contemporary Blues Album for his most recent CD, Painkiller. Bettye LaVette was recognized as Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist, her second Blues Music Award. Former Rosebud artist, the late Muddy Waters, won Best Historical Album for Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down, an album of previously unreleased recordings with Johnny Winter and James Cotton. Congratulations to several Rosebud artists who were honored in the Living Blues Readers and Critics Polls. The Critic’s Poll named Bettye LaVette both Blues Artist of the Year (Female) and Most Outstanding Blues Singer. In the Reader’s Poll awards, Marcia Ball was named Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard) and Charlie Musselwhite took Most Outstanding Musician (Harmonica). The late John Lee Hooker, a Rosebud artist for 25 years, was honored for Shout! Factory’s Hooker box set, which was named Best Blues Album of 2006 (Historical Recording) in the Reader’s Poll and Best Historical Reissue / Post-war in the Critic’s Poll.
Blues Revue will feature Bettye LaVette on the cover of its October/November issue, with an interview and story detailing the making of her upcoming album. The Scene Of The Crime, out September 25 on Anti-, is the follow-up to 2005’s I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise and features Bettye collaborating with the Drive-By Truckers. The album was produced by Dave Barbe, Drive-By Truckers frontman Patterson Hood and LaVette herself at Fame studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, where the singer cut her first full-length record in the early ‘70s only to have it shelved by Atlantic. The Scene Of The Crime features LaVette’s interpretations of songs by Willie Nelson, Elton John and more, with musical contributions from Muscle Shoals veterans including Spooner Oldham and David Hood (father of Patterson). The Los Angeles Times has described the result as "absolutely LaVette's album, full of simmering open space that lets her hard-fought revelations on love and liquor resonate." Bill Frisell was named Best Guitarist for the fourth year in a row (and seventh in 10 years) in Downbeat's Critics Poll. New Orleans' own Dirty Dozen Brass Band and very special guests are paying tribute to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, by releasing their reinterpretation of the classic CD on the record’s 35th anniversary. Adding even more weight to the project is the fact that the political and social issues of that era remain relevant today and are emphasized by the fact that the CD is being released on August 29, the anniversary of the Katrina disaster. Bill Frisell was voted Best Guitarist in the annual critics poll in the current issue (Aug 2005) of Downbeat magazine. Bettye LaVette performed with an all star group of musicians on Sirius radio network in conjunction with the release of Dan Aykroyd’s and Ben Manilla's new book “Elwood’s Blues, Interviews with the Blues Legends & Stars”. In celebration of the release, Backbeat Books & The Sirius Satellite Network joined together and co-hosted a performance which featured blues greats from around the world. Rosebud Agency artists had a great night at the 25th Annual W. C. Handy Blues Awards Thursday April 29. Marcia Ball scored double honors for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and also for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year for her latest Alligator CD, So Many Rivers (also a Grammy Nominee this year in the same category). Duke Robillard's guitar mastery was acknowledged once again as he was named Best Blues Guitarist for the fourth time in the past five years - a stunning achievement given the competition in this category. And speaking of consistency, Charlie Musselwhite picked up his 15th Handy Award continuing an amazing streak as Best Blues Instrumentalist - Harmonica. John Hammond once again won as Best Acoustic Blues Artist - a category he has begun to dominate as well. And Bettye LaVette who was barely known to the blues world last year won Comeback Blues Album of the Year for her CD, A Woman Like Me, one of her 4 nominations this year. Finally, Best Historical Blues CD of the year went to Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live by former Rosebud artist, the late Muddy Waters. Bettye LaVette made an appearance at the 13th annual R&B Awards held February 20 in New York City. Bettye presented an award to the Jackie Wilson family and then joined Isaac Hayes, George Clinton, Mary Wilson and others on stage for a group number. The group picture appeared in the New York Times on March 11 in conjunction with an article on the event. Bettye also performed on Mountain Stage on March 9 in Charleston, WV and was rewarded with a standing ovation from the enthusiastic audience.
