Congratulations to several Rosebud artists who were honored in the Living Blues Readers and Critics Polls. The Critic’s Poll named Bettye LaVette both Blues Artist of the Year (Female) and Most Outstanding Blues Singer. In the Reader’s Poll awards, Marcia Ball was named Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard) and Charlie Musselwhite took Most Outstanding Musician (Harmonica). The late John Lee Hooker, a Rosebud artist for 25 years, was honored for Shout! Factory’s Hooker box set, which was named Best Blues Album of 2006 (Historical Recording) in the Reader’s Poll and Best Historical Reissue / Post-war in the Critic’s Poll.
Bill Frisell was named Best Guitarist for the fourth year in a row (and seventh in 10 years) in Downbeat's Critics Poll. Several frequent Frisell collaborators were also honored: Sam Yahel was on top in the Rising Star Organ category and Jenny Scheinman was named #1 Rising Star Violin, while producer (and Frisell manager) Lee Townsend, drummers Brian Blade and Joey Baron, and violinist Eyvind Kang were among the honorees in their respective categories. Bettye LaVette and Charlie Musselwhite both placed in the top 10 for Blues Artist/Group, and Tommy Castro was among the Rising Star Blues Artist/Group honorees. The Blues Album category included J.J. Australia's inaugural Bluestar Awards honored Charlie Musselwhite at a May 17 ceremony held in connection with the Broadbeach Festival in Australia. Musselwhite, who toured down under last fall, was voted best international harmonica player by Australian blues fans. The Bluestar Awards were founded as an annual event to recognize the best of blues music in Australia and beyond. The Blues Foundation’s prestigious Blues Music Awards took place in Memphis May 10, with Rosebud artists once again proving their popularity in the genre. Charlie Musselwhite was the big winner of the evening with four awards, including top honors for his latest album, Delta Hardware. Marcia Ball took home the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year for the third year in a row. The Historical Album of the Year award went to John Lee Hooker, a Rosebud artist for 25 years until his passing in 2001, for Shout! Factory’s career retrospective box set Hooker. Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite lends his classic harp sound to Scott Bomar's score for the Samuel L. Jackson / Justin Timberlake / Christina Ricci film "Black Snake Moan". Charlie joins Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All Stars and their producer and musician father, Jim Dickinson as featured artists on the score. The film, which debuted to critical praise at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, was produced by Craig Brewer ("Hustle and Flow"). Legendary Bluesman Charlie Musselwhite joins Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals on Last Call with Carson Daly for a performance taping that will air on NBC on February 20, 2007. Allen Toussaint and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are among the all-star cast of the DVD "From The Big Apple to The Big Easy" which documents the benefit concert of the same name held in New York City in September 20, 2005. Allen Toussaint is featured performing solo on “Southern Nights” and with Cyndi Lauper on “Last Train/I Know (You Don’t Want Me No More)”. In addition he shares the stage with and provides accompaniment to Art Neville, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Jimmy Buffett, Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville and Irma Thomas. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are featured in performances with Elvis Costello and Dave Bartholomew, Diana Krall with Troy Andrews and Kermit Ruffins. Later, they join The Neville Brothers, The Meters and others in a show closing performance of “When the Saints Go Marching In”. Charlie Musselwhite also performed with Tom Waits at Radio City Music Hall the same evening in a simultaneous show benefiting the same cause. The live concerts raised nearly 9 million dollars for hurricane relief efforts and 100% of the proceeds from this DVD will go toward continuing those efforts. The Blues Foundation announced their annual Blues Music Awards (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards) last night and, once again, Rosebud artists were well represented. Marica Ball was honored with her third award in as many years when she was named Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year. Mavis Staples was honored as Soul/Blues Female Artist of the year for the second year in a row. Charlie Musselwhite picked up the award for Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica for the 13th time in his career, bringing his total Blues Foundation awards to 19. The awards ceremony also featured Blues Music Award nominee and Rosebud artist Tommy Castro who performed along with Kim Wilson and Elvin Bishop. The Blues Music Awards are the highest honor in the blues world, an event often touted as the Grammys of the Blues. Two Rosebud artists joined all-star line-ups to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina in the New York benefit concerts dubbed "The Big Apple to The Big Easy." The Dirty Dozen Brass Band was featured in the fundraiser at Madison Square Garden performing with Elvis Costello, Diana Krall and Dave Bartholomew. They also joined Aaron Neville and a score of other New Orleans performers for the finale of "When the Saints Go Marching In." Charlie Musselwhite lent his support by performing with Tom Waits in a simultaneous benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall. The Blues Foundation announced the recipients of the 2005 W.C. Handy Blues Awards last night (May 5, 2005) in Memphis and Rosebud artists Mavis Staples, Charlie Musselwhite and Marcia Ball received a total of eight awards. Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite were the big winners of the night tying for the most awards for any artist with three awards each. Mavis won all three of her nominations, including "Blues Album of the Year" (for her acclaimed release "Have A Little Faith"), "Soul/Blues Album of the Year" and "Soul/Blues Artist, Female". A related fourth award went to the album's title track "Have A Little Faith", which picked up "Blues Song of the Year", a songwriters award for Jim Tullio and Jim Weider. Mavis' wins come on the heels of a Grammy-bestowed Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Staple Singers. Charlie Musselwhite took home three new awards as well to add to a Handy collection that now numbers 18. Charlie won for "Best Contemporary Blues Album" ("Sanctuary"), "Best Contemporary Male Blues Artist" and "Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica" (his 12th win in the category). Bettye LaVette scored four nominations for this year's awards tying her for second most among all nominees. Her CD "So Many Rivers" is nominated in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category while "Foreclose on the House of Love" from the CD is nominated for Blues Song of the Year for the songwriter John Lee Sanders. Handy Blues Award Nominations - Charlie Musselwhite, Marcia Ball, John Hammond and Duke Robillard named
Charlie Musselwhite scored four nominations for this year's awards as his latest CD, One Night In America, was picked in nominations for Blues Album of the Year and Contemporary Blues Album of the Year. Charlie was also acknowledged with nominations for Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year and his perennial nomination for Blues Instrumentalist - Harmonica. Marcia Ball, last year’s most nominated artist and 2002 winner for Blues Album of the year, had no new CD this year but she is nominated for Contemporary Blues - Female Artist of the Year as well as Blues Instrumentalist - Keyboards. John Hammond is once again nominated for Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year - the category he won again last year. And guitar virtuoso, Duke Robillard is nominated once again for Blues Instrumentalist - Guitar. Duke won this award in 2000 and 2001 and was nominated last year as well. In addition to the above, Otis Taylor, who joins Rosebud artists John Hammond and Charlie Musselwhite (as well as Eric Bibb) on this year's W.C. Handy All Stars tour, snagged nominations for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year and Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year. The W.C. Rubén Blades’ Mundo CD has been nominated as Best World Music Album. The Blind Boys of Alabama follow their Grammy win for Spirit of the Century with a nomination for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album for this year’s Higher Ground. Charlie Musselwhite’s One Night In America is nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Charlie also contributes a track to Preachin' The Blues: The Music Of Mississippi Fred McDowell which is nominated in the Best Traditional Blues album category. Fiddler’s 4 (Bruce Molsky, Michael Doucet, Darol Anger & Rushad Eggleston) are nominated in the category of Best Traditional Folk Album for their debut eponymous CD. Also nominated in the same category is Evangeline Made produced by Ann Savoy of the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band. Ann performs a track on the CD with Linda Ronstadt as well as one with Savoy Doucet backed by a rhythm section featuring Sonny Landreth on guitar. Also, Tony Bennett's "Playing With My Friends" (the title song was co-written by Robert Cray) was nominated for Best Traditional Pop Album. John Hammond, whose Tom Waits produced Wicked Grin CD has been collecting accolades all year, hauls in three nominations including Contemporary Blues Album of the Year, Blues Album of the Year, and Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year. Duke Robillard who was named #1 Blues Guitarist in 2000 and 2001 returns once again as a nominee in the same category in 2002. Charlie Musselwhite, already a ten time W. C. Handy Award winner, brings in yet another nomination for Blues Instrumentalist-Harmonica. Charlie's song, "Charlie's Old Highway 51 Blues", also got a nod for Blues Song of the Year. Charlie Musselwhite reunited with friends and collaborators Eliades Ochoa (of Buena Vista Social Club fame) and his band Cuarteto Patria on their debut tour of America with Charlie opening each show before joining the band each night. Eliades and Cuarteto Patria contributed to Charlie's most recent cd, 
Charlie Musselwhite will perform with Conan O'Brien's Late Night Band on June 18. The Robert Cray Band performs on the show on June 23 and
