Congratulations to several Rosebud artists who were honored in the Living Blues Readers and Critics Polls. The Critics Poll named Bettye LaVette both Blues Artist of the Year (Female) and Most Outstanding Blues Singer. In the Readers Poll awards, Marcia Ball was named Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard) and Charlie Musselwhite took Most Outstanding Musician (Harmonica). The late John Lee Hooker, a Rosebud artist for 25 years, was honored for Shout! Factorys Hooker box set, which was named Best Blues Album of 2006 (Historical Recording) in the Readers Poll and Best Historical Reissue / Post-war in the Critics Poll.
Bill Frisell was named Best Guitarist for the fourth year in a row (and seventh in 10 years) in Downbeat's Critics Poll. Several frequent Frisell collaborators were also honored: Sam Yahel was on top in the Rising Star Organ category and Jenny Scheinman was named #1 Rising Star Violin, while producer (and Frisell manager) Lee Townsend, drummers Brian Blade and Joey Baron, and violinist Eyvind Kang were among the honorees in their respective categories. Bettye LaVette and Charlie Musselwhite both placed in the top 10 for Blues Artist/Group, and Tommy Castro was among the Rising Star Blues Artist/Group honorees. The Blues Album category included J.J. Cale & Eric Claptons "The Road To Escondido" as well as Musselwhites "Delta Hardware". Australia's inaugural Bluestar Awards honored Charlie Musselwhite at a May 17 ceremony held in connection with the Broadbeach Festival in Australia. Musselwhite, who toured down under last fall, was voted best international harmonica player by Australian blues fans. The Bluestar Awards were founded as an annual event to recognize the best of blues music in Australia and beyond. The honor came one week after Musselwhite swept the Blues Music Awards in Memphis with wins in four categories.
The Blues Foundations prestigious Blues Music Awards took place in Memphis May 10, with Rosebud artists once again proving their popularity in the genre. Charlie Musselwhite was the big winner of the evening with four awards, including top honors for his latest album, Delta Hardware. Marcia Ball took home the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year for the third year in a row. The Historical Album of the Year award went to John Lee Hooker, a Rosebud artist for 25 years until his passing in 2001, for Shout! Factorys career retrospective box set Hooker. Charlie Musselwhite was the only artist to win more than two awards, taking honors for Album of the Year, Traditional Blues Album of the Year, Song of the Year ("Church Is Out"), and - for the 14th year - Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica.
Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite lends his classic harp sound to Scott Bomar's score for the Samuel L. Jackson / Justin Timberlake / Christina Ricci film "Black Snake Moan". Charlie joins Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi All Stars and their producer and musician father, Jim Dickinson as featured artists on the score. The film, which debuted to critical praise at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, was produced by Craig Brewer ("Hustle and Flow"). The Soundtrack CD features Charlie on three selections plus contributions from such artists as The Black Keys, R.L Burnside, and The North Mississippi All Stars on their own tracks as well.
Legendary Bluesman Charlie Musselwhite joins Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals on Last Call with Carson Daly for a performance taping that will air on NBC on February 20, 2007. Close musical friends, Charlie and Ben have collaborated at each others concerts and in the studio. Allen Toussaint and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are among the all-star cast of the DVD "From The Big Apple to The Big Easy" which documents the benefit concert of the same name held in New York City in September 20, 2005. Allen Toussaint is featured performing solo on Southern Nights and with Cyndi Lauper on Last Train/I Know (You Dont Want Me No More). In addition he shares the stage with and provides accompaniment to Art Neville, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, Clarence Frogman Henry, Jimmy Buffett, Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville and Irma Thomas. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are featured in performances with Elvis Costello and Dave Bartholomew, Diana Krall with Troy Andrews and Kermit Ruffins. Later, they join The Neville Brothers, The Meters and others in a show closing performance of When the Saints Go Marching In. Charlie Musselwhite also performed with Tom Waits at Radio City Music Hall the same evening in a simultaneous show benefiting the same cause. The Blues Foundation announced their annual Blues Music Awards (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards) last night and, once again, Rosebud artists were well represented. Marica Ball was honored with her third award in as many years when she was named Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year. Mavis Staples was honored as Soul/Blues Female Artist of the year for the second year in a row. Charlie Musselwhite picked up the award for Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica for the 13th time in his career, bringing his total Blues Foundation awards to 19. The awards ceremony also featured Blues Music Award nominee and Rosebud artist Tommy Castro who performed along with Kim Wilson and Elvin Bishop. The Blues Music Awards are the highest honor in the blues world, an event often touted as the Grammys of the Blues. Rosebud Artists scored 13 nominations for the Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards. Marcia Ball is tied for most nominated artist overall this year with four nominations including Entertainer of the Year, Contemporary Blues Album of the Year, Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and Piano Player of the Year. Tommy Castro makes his first appearance in the Blues Music Awards with nominations for both Contemporary Blues Male Artist of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year for his album Soul Shaker. Bettye LaVette was honored with a nomination for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year for the third year in a row, as well as a nod for Soul Blues Album of the Year for her album I've Got My Own Hell to Raise. Last year's big winners Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite were nominated again for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year and Instrumentalist - Harmonica, respectively. John Hammond's album, In Your Arms Again, was awarded a nomination for Best Acoustic Album of the Year. Robert Cray's song "Twenty" was honored with a nomination for Song of the Year and the late Muddy Waters rounds out the Rosebud Agency honors with a nomination for Historical Album of the Year for the Album Hoochie Coochie Man: The Complete Chess Recordings, Volume 2, 1952 - 1958.

Charlie Musselwhite's album Sanctuary and Mavis Staples' Have A Little Faith were not only reader's favorites but both were honored in the same category in Downbeat's recent Critic's Poll. Charlie and Mavis were also the big winners in this year's W.C. Handy Blues awards.
Two Rosebud artists joined all-star line-ups to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina in the New York benefit concerts dubbed "The Big Apple to The Big Easy." The Dirty Dozen Brass Band was featured in the fundraiser at Madison Square Garden performing with Elvis Costello, Diana Krall and Dave Bartholomew. They also joined Aaron Neville and a score of other New Orleans performers for the finale of "When the Saints Go Marching In." Charlie Musselwhite lent his support by performing with Tom Waits in a simultaneous benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall. Other performers on the two shows included Simon and Garfunkel, John Fogerty, Elton John, Dave Matthews, Joss Stone, Jimmy Buffet and Lenny Kravitz.

The Blues Foundation announced the recipients of the 2005 W.C. Handy Blues Awards last night (May 5, 2005) in Memphis and Rosebud artists Mavis Staples, Charlie Musselwhite and Marcia Ball received a total of eight awards. Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite were the big winners of the night tying for the most awards for any artist with three awards each. Mavis won all three of her nominations, including "Blues Album of the Year" (for her acclaimed release "Have A Little Faith"), "Soul/Blues Album of the Year" and "Soul/Blues Artist, Female". A related fourth award went to the album's title track "Have A Little Faith", which picked up "Blues Song of the Year", a songwriters award for Jim Tullio and Jim Weider. Mavis' wins come on the heels of a Grammy-bestowed Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Staple Singers. Charlie Musselwhite took home three new awards as well to add to a Handy collection that now numbers 18. Charlie won for "Best Contemporary Blues Album" ("Sanctuary"), "Best Contemporary Male Blues Artist" and "Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica" (his 12th win in the category). Marcia also received nominations for Best Contemporary Female Artist and Blues Instrumentalist - Keyboards. John Hammond is once again nominated for Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year - the category he won most recently in 2002. Charlie Musselwhite scored another nomination for Blues Instrumentalist - Harmonica, a category he wins almost every year. Charlie also contributes a track to Preachin' The Blues: The Music Of Mississippi Fred McDowell which is nominated in the Best Traditional Blues album category. Fiddlers 4 (Bruce Molsky, Michael Doucet, Darol Anger & Rushad Eggleston) are nominated in the category of Best Traditional Folk Album for their debut eponymous CD. Also nominated in the same category is Evangeline Made produced by Ann Savoy of the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band. Ruth Brown picked up Handy nominations for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year, Soul Blues CD of the Year and her title track, A Good Day For The Blues was nominated as Blues Song Of The Year. Charlie Musselwhite picked up two handy nominations - one for Blues Instrumentalist of the Year - Guitar and for Blues CD of the Year. And Robert Cray scored a Handy nomination for Contemporary Male Blues Artist of the Year. Charlie Musselwhite & Luther Allison continue W. C. Handy Award Streaks Charlie Musselwhite once again won the W.C Handy Awards for Best Blues Instrumentalist - Harmonica. Charlie has been dominant in this category for the past decade. Luther Allison, who swept the Handys in his last touring years was honored once again with a posthumous award for Reissue Album Of The Year for Ruf Records' reissue of Luther's Hand Me Down My Moonshine CD. Rosebud artists score ten W.C. Handy Awards Nominations The late Luther Allison swept the W.C Handy Awards nominations for the third year earning six nominations including Blues Entertainer of the Year, Blues Band of the Year, Contemporary Blues-Male Artist of the Year, Blues Instrumentalist - Guitar, Contemporary Blues Album of the Year for Reckless and "Living In The House of The Blues" earned him Blues Song of The Year. Also picking up a much deserved W.C. Handy nomination is Duke Robillard for Best Blues Instrumentalist - Guitar. Charlie Musselwhite also scored Handy nominations for Contemporary Blues - Male Artist of the Year as well as for Blues Instrumentalist-Harmonica.
