Duke Robillard, Jay Geils and Gerry Beaudoin's New Guitar Summit Album, Shivers In Stores July 8 Duke Robillard joins up with Jay Geils and Gerry Beaudoin once again as New Guitar Summit for a new album, Shivers. The second album by the trio of stellar guitarists, Shivers is set for release on Stony Plain Records July 8 in the U.S. and June 10 in Canada. Covering classics such as Flying Home, Honey Suckle Rose and Broadway, Robillard, Geils and Beaudoin come together to play a rousing set of vintage jazz and blues. Produced by Jay Geils, the album also includes four original songs between the New Guitar Summit members and features Canadian rocker Randy Bachman on two Mose Allison covers. Duke Robillards latest CD, A Swingin' Session with Duke Robillard is due for release on May 13. His 14th album on the Stony Plain label features special guests Scott Hamilton, Bruce Katz, Doug James and Carl Querfurth. Tracks include a number of timeless jazz standards, as well as some great small group swing and blues tunes. The album focuses on the swing side of Dukes playing, and includes classics like Deed I Do, The Song Is Ended, Them That Got, and When Your Lover Has Gone. Duke is currently nominated by the Blues Music Awards for Best Blues Guitarist, an award he has won 4 times previously. Duke Robillards World Full of Blues (Stony Plain Records) and Tommy Castros Painkiller (Blind Pig) were voted among the Top 10 CDs of 2007 by House of Blues Radio Hour listeners. The January 7th and 8th House of Blues Radio hour featured Robilards "World Of Blues" and Castros "I Roll When I Rock." Tommy Castros "Soul Shaker" was also featured on the International Blues Challenge segment on January 19th and 20th in honor of his past win. House of Blues Radio Hour is hosted weekly by Dan Akroyd. Bettye LaVettes incredible year (Grammy nomination, Pollstar magazine cover story and topping many Best Of 2007 lists) continues with three nominations for Album of the Year (Scene Of The Crime), Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Tommy Castro grabs two nominations for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year (Painkiller) and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Duke Robillard yet again receives a nod for Best Instrumentalist - Guitar. Robillard has won this award an unprecedented four previous times. Rosebud artists Bettye Lavette and Duke Robillard have been nominated for Canada's 11th annual Maple Blues Awards. Selected by a distinguished panel of blues DJs and journalists across Canada, Bettye LaVette and Duke Robillard have been nominated for the B.B. King International Artist award. The Maple Blues Awards are coordinated by the Toronto Blues Society, and you can cast your vote Nov. 3 - Dec. 8 by visiting mapleblues.ca. Winners will be announced at the awards gala in Toronto on Jan. 21, 2008."
The House of Blues Radio Hour will feature Duke Robillard in early October, marking the latest highlight in a major year for the singer/guitarist. Dukes 2006 album, Guitar Groove-A-Rama, was nominated for a Grammy earlier this year and his just released double-disc CD, Duke Robillards World Full of Blues is being met with widespread acclaim. Duke also received the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award from his home state in June. He has been on the road steadily over the past year, touring North America and Europe several times in addition to playing guitar for Tom Waits on his rare late 2006 tour. The State of Rhode Island has announced that Duke Robillard will be honored for Excellence in the Arts at the 2007 Rhode Island Pell Awards. The prestigious award honors exceptional artists who have contributed to the advancement of their chosen form as well as the betterment of the community and world at large. Duke will receive the award at a June 2 ceremony along with fellow Pell recipients Bob Colonna, Mihailo "Misha" Djuric and Olympia Dukakis. Dukes new album, the two-disc Duke Robillards World Full of Blues, is due out in June and he will be touring with his band throughout the year.
Rosebud Artists scored 14 nominations this year for the Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards. Charlie Musselwhite is nominated for 5 awards, including Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Traditional Blues Album of the Year (Delta Hardware), Song of the Year ("Church is Out") and his perennial nomination for Best Instrumentalist- Harmonica. Bettye LaVette is honored with two nominations for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year (her fourth year in a row), as well as a nod for the top honor of the evening - B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Marcia Ball also earned two nominations for the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year (4th consecutive nomination) and Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year. Duke Robillard received a nomination for Best Instrumentalist - Guitar and his saxophone player, Doug James, receives one as well for Best Instrumentalist - Horn. Mavis Staples is nominated for the fourth year in a row for Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year. Former Rosebud artist, the late Ruth Brown is nominated for Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year and the late John Lee Hooker's just released box set, Hooker (on Shout! Factory), has been nominated for Historical Album of the Year. Rosebud owner/founder, Mike Kappus, coordinated 16 of the original featured recordings in the package. The 49th annual Grammy nominations were announced with Rosebud artists Allen Toussaint, Duke Robillard and Ann Savoy honored in the Pop, Blues and Folk categories, respectively. Allen Toussaint received a nomination in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for his collaboration with Elvis Costello on The River in Reverse, a project created in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's devastation to Toussaint's hometown. Duke Robillard received the first Grammy nomination of his career for his latest CD Guitar Groove-A-Rama in the Best Traditional Blues Album category. Ann Savoy from The Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band was recognized for her collaboration with ten-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt in the Best Traditional Folk Album category for Adieu False Heart. Congratulations also to Gary Paczosa, engineer of the CD who was nominated for Best Engineered Album. In addition, Booker T. Jones will be honored with a Lifetime Grammy Achievement Award for his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame career with Booker T. & the MG's. The Grammys will air on CBS onFebruary 11, 2007. Duke Robillard Joins Tom Waits Touring Band for August dates Duke Robillard has been picked to play guitar in Tom Waits band for an upcoming run of dates. Duke has collaborated on stage or in the studio with some legendary figures in the past including Bob Dylan, Ruth Brown, Muddy Waters and B.B. King among others but this will be his first collaboration with Waits. Dates begin August 1 in Atlanta, GA and run through August 13 in Akron, OH. Duke Robillards Guitar Groove-A-Rama will be released on Stony Plain Records on March 14. The new CD features Duke in a mostly trio format, accentuating the many nuances of his guitar work and representing perhaps Dukes most ambitious album yet in a career that spans almost 40 years. Dukes credits include a long list of impressive collaborations in studio and onstage with everyone for Muddy Waters and B B King to Bob Dylan. He is also known for founding Roomful of Blues and replacing Jimmie Vaughan in The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Duke has been honored as Best Guitarist at The Blues Music Awards (formerly The W.C. Handy Awards) 4 of the past 6 years and was named "Best International Blues Artist" in Canadas Maple Blues Awards three of the past five years. The year end "Best of" lists have begun again and Bettye LaVette, Duke Robillard and Tommy Castro are among those honored so far. Duke Robillard and Mavis Staples have each been nominated in the category of International Artist of the Year in the 2005 Maple Blues Awards. Duke Robillard has dominated the category in recent years winning the award each year from 2001 through 2003. The awards are presented by The Toronto Blues Society. Bill Frisell was voted Best Guitarist in the annual critics poll in the current issue (Aug 2005) of Downbeat magazine. Bill also ranks in several other categories including Best Jazz Artist, Best Composer, Best Arranger, Best Electric Group and Best Jazz Album for his 2005 Grammy winning CD Unspeakable. Individual musicians from Bill's various touring bands were also recognized as Jenny Scheinman was voted top Rising Star Violin and Sam Yahel was voted top Rising Star Organ. Brian Blade was also acknowledged in both the Best Drums and Rising Star Drums categories with Ron Miles ranking in Rising Star Trumpet. The Blues Foundation's nominees for the 26th Annual W.C. Handy Awards feature five Rosebud artists scoring a total of 12 nominations. Mavis Staples' first appearance in the Handy voting has her scoring among the most nominated artists this year with four nominations including Blues Album of the Year and Soul/Blues Album of the Year for her new release Have a Little Faith as well as a nod for Soul/Blues-Female Artist of the Year. The title track "Have a Little Faith" also received a Blues Song of the Year nomination for writers Jim Tullio and Jim Weider. Perennial winner, Charlie Musselwhite received three nominations including Contemporary Blues Album of the Year for Sanctuary, Contemporary Blues-Male Artist of the Year and Best Instrumentalist-Harmonica. Marcia Ball also continues as a Handy favorite with nominations for Best Instrumentalist-Keyboards as well as Contemporary Blues-Female Artist of the Year. Bettye LaVette scored four nominations for this year's awards tying her for second most among all nominees. Her album "A Woman Like Me" was picked in nominations for Blues Album of the Year, Soul Blues Album of the Year and Comeback Album of the Year. Bettye was also acknowledged with a nomination for Best Soul Female Artist. Marcia Ball, the 2002 winner for Blues Album of the Year, picked up three nominations. Her CD "So Many Rivers" is nominated in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category while "Foreclose on the House of Love" from the CD is nominated for Blues Song of the Year for the songwriter John Lee Sanders. Marcia also received nominations for Best Contemporary Female Artist and Blues Instrumentalist - Keyboards. John Hammond is once again nominated for Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year - the category he won most recently in 2002. Charlie Musselwhite scored another nomination for Blues Instrumentalist - Harmonica, a category he wins almost every year. And guitar virtuoso, Duke Robillard is nominated once again for Blues Instrumentalist - Guitar. Duke won this award in 2000, 2001 and 2003 and this is his 5th consecutive nomination in the category - an extremely impressive accomplishment given the strength of the annual competition in the guitar category. Also, Jay McShann's "Going To Kansas City" (featuring Rosebud artist and previous McShann producer, Duke Robillard, on guitar) was nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album. Deceased long-time Rosebud Agency artists Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Willie Dixon are featured in "The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966, Volume 1" which was nominated for Best Long Form Music Video. Also nominated in this same category is Muddy Waters who is, of course, the focus of "Muddy Waters, Can't Be Satisfied". A number of artists featured on the Earthjustice benefit CD "Where We Live - Stand For What You Stand On" compiled by Rosebud founder, Mike Kappus, were also among the nominees. Earthjustice contributors Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, and Bob Dylan were all nominated in a variety of categories.
