 Every once in a blue moon along comes someone who can merge the forces of virtuosity and exuberance and unleash them on an unsuspecting public. The latest in this exclusive line of blue moon arrivals is Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews.
Andrews plays trombone and trumpet. He is a man to be reckoned with on both. A product of New Orleans' culturally rich Treme neighborhood, Andrews was a bandleader by the age of 6. While Andrews was navigating New Orleans as a youngster with his band in tow, he was also absorbing lessons at the knee of his older brother James, a dynamic musical performer known as "Satchmo of the Ghetto." It is safe to say that by the time Andrews hit his early teens, he had a PhD in the ways of the streets, which you can still hear in his music. But he has also grown into a performer emanating elegance and class; gleaned from his successful studies at the prestigious New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA). Trombone Shorty received top honors at the Big Easy Music Awards in New Orleans this week, earning the Best Male Performer Award. He was also featured on Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino which was named the Best Album of 2007. The all star hit compilation also featured Rosebud artists Marcia Ball, Allen Toussaint and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty will be featured participants in the nationally televised NBA All-Star game on TNT Sunday, February 17th. Trombone Shorty will perform during the player introductions along with Branford Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band. Allen Toussaint will perform at half time as part of an all star lineup of keyboardists also featuring Harry Connick, Jr. and his band with Dr. John, Davell Crawford, Art Neville, Ivan Neville, Jonathan Batiste and Ellis Marsalis. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will perform throughout the television special on the preceding day which will include the 3-Point Challenge, Slam Dunk competition and skills challenge. The NBA All-Star Game begins at 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific) at New Orleans Arena. Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu praised Trombone Shorty for his dedication to the community, and honored him with an award from the State of Louisiana. Senator Diana Bajoie of Louisiana awarded him with a state proclamation for his musical contributions, and Mayor Ray Nagin also attended the multi-cultural event, and presented Trombone Shorty with a proclamation from the City of New Orleans. City Council members were also in attendance, along with State Representative Juan LeFonte, who also awarded Trombone Shorty with a declaration from the State of Louisiana House. Politicians joined New Orleans families and churchgoers to hear this unique musical Christmas event organized by the New Orleans Music Hall of Fame featuring New Orleans's newest star, Trombone Shorty. And later in the week at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Lenny Kravitz sat in on drums with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. The show was a benefit for the Daniel Price Memorial Fund which also included Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins, and Rockin' Dopsie. Rosebud artists Bettye LaVette and Mavis Staples scored spots in the top 35 of Village Voice's annual "Pazz & Jop Poll" for LaVette’s Scene Of The Crime and Staples’ We'll Never Turn Back. The annual poll combines ballots from 577 critics’ Top 10 lists to acknowledge the best albums of 2007. Additional Rosebud artists whose CDs were honored were Bill Frisell (for his work with Floratone and with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano) Loudon Wainwright III, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ruthie Foster, Pieta Brown, Ann Savoy and the late Muddy Waters. Rosebud artists Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet were honored at Offbeat Magazine's 2007 Best of the Beat Awards in New Orleans on January 12th. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue took home the award for Best R&B/Funk Band or Performer. Trombone Shorty took home his second consecutive award for Band or Performer of the Year.
