Touring behind their first-ever Nashville recording, gospel legends The Blind Boys of Alabama will be joined by acclaimed Americana singer/songwriter and musician Sara Watkins as they explore the deep and vital connection between country and gospel music. The Blind Boys of Alabama release their new CD, Takin' The High Road, in May 2011, co-produced by rising country star Jamey Johnson and featuring some of country music's greatest stars, including Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Vince Gill, The Oak Ridge Boys and Lee Ann Womack. For over 60 years, the Blind Boys have thrilled audiences across the globe, notching 5 Grammy awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an induction into The Gospel Music Hall of Fame, White House performances under Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama, and intriguing collaborations with such artists as Ben Harper, Lou Reed, Tom Petty, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, and many, many more.
A founding member of the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek, Sarah Watkins established herself as a highly talented musician and songwriter, collecting multiple Grammy nominations and a Grammy win in 2003. Her successful solo career is marked by her self titled CD on Nonesuch Records, produced by John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). She first performed with the Blind Boys at the Lincoln Center Festival in 2010 and the band fell in love with her soft, warm vocals and sweet fiddle playing. In addition to her own opening set, Sara will join the Blind Boys onstage to perform songs from their new CD.
