Mavis Staples is an American treasure. She is a Lifetime Grammy Award winner (and 2011 Grammy winner!), Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, National Heritage Fellowship award winner and was featured on Rolling Stone's Greatest Singers of All Time and VH1's list of Greatest Women of Rock and Roll. With The Staple Singers and on her own, Mavis is responsible for blazing a rhythm & blues trail while never relinquishing her gospel roots. She recently took the stage at the Kennedy Center Honors alongside James Taylor to pay tribute to 2010 recipient Paul McCartney. Her rousing renditions of "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude" earned a standing ovation from the distinguished crowd, which included the President and Michelle Obama. Her latest CD You Are Not Alone (produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco) was honored with a 2011 Grammy for Best Americana Album and received universal acclaim with NPR, Mojo and Paste, among others, all including the CD on their end of the year Best Of lists. Recent television appearances include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman and The Colbert Report. Rolling Stone praised the album and declared "Staples sounds as inspiring as ever," while NPR enthused "she turns a simple pop song into a lament that could move a listener to tears."
