DECEMBER 2012: Mavis Staples On The Colbert Report With Jeff Tweedy And Sean Lennon - December 13
Mavis Staples, 2011 Grammy Winner for the Best Americana Album, appeared on The Colbert Report Thursday, December 13 on Comedy Central. Mavis was featured as a special guest Caroler for Colbert's Christmas Carol Week and was joined by Sean Lennon and Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco). Tweedy, who produced and wrote two songs on Mavis' Grammy winning album You Are Not Alone, also appeared on the show with Mavis in 2010. Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples are currently in the studio working on Staples' upcoming 2013 release.
Colbert's Christmas Carol Week sees his special guest carolers performing their renditions of Holiday classics. Mavis performed John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". Mavis, Lennon and Tweedy were also accompanied by the Harlem Gospel Choir. It is available on iTunes and all proceeds go to Sandy relief.
NOVEMBER 2012: Mavis Staples Gets Her Due In Michael Jackson Documentary, Bad 25
In Spike Lee's Bad 25, a documentary about the creation of Michael Jackson's seventh studio album and groundbreaking video, "Bad", Roots drummer Questlove confirms that Jackson's use of the catch phrase "Shamone" was a tribute to Mavis Staples. The film shows a young Mavis Staples using "Shamone" during a 1970s performance of The Staple Singers' song "I'll Take You There". While the origin of the word was clear to Mavis and others in the industry, Lee's efforts to preserve and spread the genius of the late pop icon have also reaffirmed Jackson's respect for Mavis Staples. The documentary, which Spike Lee called his "love letter" to Jackson, made its U.S. Television premier on ABC on Thanksgiving, November 22nd, 2012. It features interviews with superstars Martin Scorsese, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Cee-Lo Green and Chris Brown among others.
OCTOBER 2012: Mavis Staples on Austin City Limits with Bonnie Raitt, airing October 20th *watch full episode online at video.pbs.org - expires 11/17/2012
The Austin City Limits performance was taped at the Moody Theater during Mavis' 35 date tour with Bonnie Raitt. The performance captures the essence of their tour, during which Mavis opened for and collaborated on stage with Bonnie each night to the enthusiastic response from their audiences. Mavis' setlist on ACL includes songs taken from her 2011 Grammy winning CD You Are Not Alone, which featured and was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. The setlist also includes classic Staple Singers songs "Freedom Highway" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken." Bonnie Raitt performs with Mavis and her band on the latter, as well as performing alongside them on "Losing You," a song taken from Mavis' You Are Not Alone.
The ACL broadcast comes just weeks after Mavis' participation in a tribute concert for the late Levon Helm. The concert, held in early October, was a celebration of the life and music of the acclaimed musician. Mavis had collaborated with Levon recently and their most famous collaboration was The Staple Singers' performance at The Last Waltz.

SEPTEMBER 2012: Mavis Staples Featured on All Star PBS TV Special 9/21/12
Mavis Staples is a featured performer on From Dust to Dreams: Opening Night at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts airing on PBS Friday September 21, 2012 at 9 p.m. EDT. Filmed in Las Vegas, the event was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and showcases legendary performing artists including Jennifer Hudson, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride, Carole King, Joshua Bell and John Fogerty. Among many rare collaborations, Staples partnered with Carole King for a performance of King's classic "You've Got a Friend." As a part of PBS's multi-platform arts initiative, the special will showcase performing artists from not only the music world, but also from television, stage and the silver screen. The executive producer, Emmy Award winner Michael Stevens ("Kennedy Center Honors"), stated "We set out to celebrate the best of the American creative spirit…on the occasion of the opening of a world class performing arts center… It's not every day that you get the chance to see such a range of artists…”

AUGUST 2012: Mavis Staples Featured in Levon Helm Tribute and On Austin City Limits With Bonnie Raitt
Mavis Staples will be a featured performer at Love for Levon, a celebration of the life and music of Levon Helm. Staples, along with other major artists including John Mayer, Dierks Bentley, Ray LaMontagne, Greg Allman and My Morning Jacket, will perform at the tribute on October 3rd at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ. The concert will benefit the preservation of Helm's legacy by aiding his family in retaining ownership of his home and famed recording studio in Woodstock, NY (the birthplace of The Midnight Ramble Sessions).
Staples and Helm were originally scheduled to collaborate at this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. As Helm passed away shortly before the Festival, Mavis performed with her own band and paid tribute to Helm by performing The Band classic, "The Weight," with special guest Glen Hansard. The overflow crowd responded with an extended and emotional standing ovation. The Helm-Staples relationship was first documented when Mavis and The Staple Singers joined The Band's performance of "The Weight," for the classic 1976 concert Martin Scorsese film, The Last Waltz.
A highlight of Mavis' current tour with Bonnie Raitt was their recent Austin City Limits performance at the Moody Theatre. Bonnie described the scene as a "soul sisters extravaganza." JULY 2012: Rosebud Artists Marcia Ball and Mavis Staples Are Winners In The 2012 Living Blues Awards
Rosebud artists Marcia Ball and Mavis Staples have been named as winners in Living Blues magazine's 2012 Readers' Poll (issue #220). Marcia won all three of the categories she was nominated for, including Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard) - her fourth win in this category since 2007. This year also sees Marcia named Blues Artist of the Year (Female) and also as the winner for Best Blues Album of 2011 (New Release) for her CD, Roadside Attractions. Mavis Staples was named Most Outstanding Blues Singer. She won this same category in last year's Living Blues Critics' Poll.

JULY 2012: Mavis Staples And Meshell Ndegeocello In Tribute To The Life And Music Of Curtis Mayfield
Mavis Staples and Meshell Ndegeocello were both featured at New York's Lincoln Center, celebrating the life and music of Curtis Mayfield. The night, billed as "Here But I'm Gone: A 70th Birthday Tribute to Curtis Mayfield", took place on July 20 and featured the surviving members of The Impressions (the group originally led by Mayfield in the Sixties) and an array of special guests including Mavis and Meshell as well as; Dr. Lonnie Smith, William Bell, Sinéad O'Connor, The Roots, Ryan Montbleau, Aloe Blacc, Bilal, Inyang Bassey, Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe, with band leader Binky Griptite of the Dap-Kings.
The evening's event also celebrated the launch of the Curtis Mayfield Foundation, set up in his name to help disadvantaged youth progress in the arts.
The concert showcased the immense influence and impact Mayfield's vast musical catalogue has had across the decades, from Meshell's rendition of "Pusherman" - a song that was featured on Mayfield's 1972 Hit soundtrack album Superfly - through to Mavis' performance of "This is My Country". A song symbolic, in tying together Mavis and Mayfield's long history of activism since the early days of the Civil Rights Movement to the musical collaboration between Mayfield and The Staple Singers.
Mavis also joined The Impressions on stage, ripping through The Staples Singers/Mayfield collaboration on their number-one hit song "Let's Do It Again", originally released as the soundtrack to the movie of the same name that starred Sidney Poitier and Bill Crosby.
Rounding off the evening's celebration was an encore that featured the all-star line-up, raising the roof with feel-good funk classic "Move On Up", with Rolling Stone praising it as, "a collective soul-stirring rendition....ending the show with the kind of uplifting note that any true payment of respect to Curtis Mayfield's positive force certainly demanded."

JUNE 2012: Rosebud Artists Nominated for 7 Living Blues Awards: Marcia Ball, Ruthie Foster, Mavis Staples and Duke Robillard All Up For Nominations - Cast Your Vote
Marcia Ball, Ruthie Foster, Mavis Staples and Duke Robillard all earned Nominations in the 2012 Living Blues Awards, with Ruthie Foster scoring two and Marcia Ball racking up an impressive three nominations - more than any other nominee this year.
Marcia Ball was nominated for Blues Artist of the Year (Female) and Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard), both being categories she won last year. She won the former category in 2009 as well. This year Marcia is also nominated for Best Blues Album of 2011 for her CD, Roadside Attractions.
Ruthie Foster was also nominated for Blues Artist of the Year (Female) for the second year in a row - this being a category she won in the Critic's Poll in 2010. This year she also brought in a nomination for Best Blues DVD of 2011 with Ruthie Foster - Live At Antone's.
Mavis Staples is also acknowledged as a nominee for Most Outstanding Blues Singer, a category she won in the 2011 Critic's Poll in which she also won as Blues Artist of the Year.
Duke Robillard earns a nomination for Most Outstanding Musician (Guitar), a category he has won 4 times in the Blues Music Awards (of an impressive 14 nominations).

NOVEMBER 2011: Mavis Staples To Perform On VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul Premiering December 19, 2011 - Honoring The Great Cities Of Soul Music
Mavis Staples will perform on VH1's Divas Celebrate Soul at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom to pay tribute to the great cities of soul music - Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis and Philadelphia. VH1's Divas Celebrate Soul premieres Monday, December 19 at 9 PM/8c on VH1. Joining Mavis on the show are Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Boyz II Men, Estelle and Travie McCoy.
"Celebrating the soul music borne out of some of the world's greatest cities being performed by today's top artists with the iconic legends that put soul music on the map prove this year's 'Divas' will be a must-see event," said Lee Rolontz, EVP, Original Music Production & Development, VH1 and VH1 Classic.

NOVEMBER 2011: Rosebud Artists Score DownBeat Readers Poll Honors Once Again
Rosebud Artists once again were honored by fans in this year's DownBeat magazineReaders Poll (December issue), with Bill Frisell, Trombone Shorty (who's also featured in this issue's cover story), Allen Toussaint, Dr. John (who Rosebud represents for International booking outside the U.S. and Canada), Bettye LaVette, Charlie Musselwhite and Mavis Staples all placing high in a number of categories.
Bill Frisell scored high in three categories, placing in the top 10 Jazz Albums of the Year for Beautiful Dreamers, in the top 5 for Best Guitarist (a category he has won 3 times in the past) and among the Best Beyond Albums for his collaboration with Vinicius Cantuária, Lagrimas Mexicanas.
Dr. John, Bettye LaVette and Charlie Musselwhite were honored in two categories each. They were all voted among the top Best Blues Artists. In addition, Dr. John was among the Best Beyond Artists, Bettye's Interpretations - The British Rock Songbook was among the Best Beyond Albums and Charlie's The Well was voted among the Best Blues Albums.

Top honors were awarded to Rosebud artists Mavis Staples, Marcia Ball and Charlie Musselwhite at the 18th Annual Living Blues Awards. Mavis won the Critics' Poll Blues Artist of the Year Award (Female) and Most Outstanding Blues Singer. In the Readers' Poll, Marcia was awarded Blues Artist of the Year (Female) and Most Outstanding Musician (Keyboard). For the fifth year in a row Charlie won Readers' Poll Most Outstanding Musician award (Harmonica). Congratulations Mavis, Marcia and Charlie!
JULY 2011: Bill Frisell Honored With 10TH DownBeat Critics Poll Win For Guitarist of the Year - Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty, Bettye LaVette, Dr. John, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples Also Recognized
Bill Frisell has been honored for the tenth time in fourteen years as Guitarist of the Year in the DownBeat Critics Poll (August 2011 issue). This is Bill's third win in a row as Best Guitarist. Bill was also recognized in the Beyond Album category with Vinicius Cantuária for their duo album, Lagrimas Mexicanas. In addition, Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty, Bettye LaVette, Dr. John, Charlie Musselwhite and Mavis Staples were all also recognized in the Critics Poll.
Allen Toussaint was named in the Arranger category; Trombone Shorty was recognized in both the Trombone and Rising Star: Trombone categories. Bettye LaVette, Dr. John and Charlie Musselwhite were all named in the Blues Artist category. Charlie received an additional nod in the Blues Album category, while Dr. John was also named in the Beyond Artist category. Mavis Staplesand Bettye LaVette were both recognized in the Beyond Album category. The late Muddy Waters (a Rosebud artist until his passing) was also named as one of the finalists for induction into the Hall of Fame.
As usual, many of Bill Frisell's frequent and recent collaborators were also honored: Jason Moran was awarded Jazz Artist Of The Year, Jazz Album Of The Year, and Piano of the Year, as well as being named in the Rising Star: Jazz Artist, Composer and Rising Star: Composer categories; Joe Lovano Us Five was awarded Jazz Group of the Year and Joe was also named in the Jazz Artist, Jazz Album, Soprano and Tenor Saxophone categories; Paul Motian was awarded Drummer of the Year and he was also named in the Hall of Fame and Jazz Artist categories; Dave Holland was awarded Acoustic Bass of the Year and was named in the Jazz Album, Composer, Arranger and Jazz Group categories; Jenny Scheinman was named in the Violin category; and Bill's Manager and Producer, Lee Townsend, was named in both the Producer and Rising Star: Producer categories.

JULY 2011: Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama Featured In New Gospel Documentary: Rejoice and Shout - In Select Theaters Now
Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama are both featured in the new gospel documentary, Rejoice and Shout (released June 3, 2011). Tracing the history of gospel, the film includes archival footage of an onstage duel between The Blind Boys of Alabama and the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. Mavis Staples is featured both in present day interviews as well as archival footage of her early performances with The Staples Singers, her family's legendary band (who, in addition to Mavis and Pops Staples, Rosebud is honored to have represented). MAY 2011: 2011 GRAMMY Winner Mavis Staples Receives Honorary Doctor of Music Degree From Berklee College of Music
2011 GRAMMY Winner Mavis Staples received an Honorary Doctor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music on May 7, 2011 (read the full story). Berklee president Roger H. Brown presented the honorary degree to Mavis for her dedication to bringing gospel music to the mainstream and aspiring to uplift and bring about social change through music.
"Well, I finally made it to college. Finally!" said Mavis upon receiving her degree. "I'm so deeply honored, and I sit here in awe of these smiling beautiful faces. I know the world is waiting for you, and you're ready to go out and bring the joy of music to the world."
Mavis was joined by fellow honorees Michael McDonald; Chucho Valdés and his father, Bebo Valdés; and Kenny Garrett. This year's honorary doctorate recipients were recognized for their achievements in contemporary music, for their enduring contributions to popular culture, and for the influence their careers and music have had over Berklee's international student body. They join esteemed past recipients including David Bowie, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Sting, B.B. King, James Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Loretta Lynn, Quincy Jones, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Smokey Robinson, and Patti Labelle. The honors took place during Berklee's 2011 commencement, held at the Agganis Arena at Boston University for the graduating class and an estimated crowd of more than 4,000 guests.

APRIL 2011: 2011 GRAMMY Winner Mavis Staples Featured on CBS Sunday Morning's Sunday Profile
Mavis proclaimed in the piece, "I was put here to sing. I was put here to spread the word. To bring ya'll a message. To inspire you. To motivate you. You know, that's what Mavis is about. 2011 GRAMMY Winner Mavis Staples will be featured on NPR's Mountain Stage, premiering April 1, 2011. The following week the show will be posted to NPR's archive on their website here. Mavis' performance was recorded at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow, Scotland as part of the Celtic Connections Festival in January 2011. Mavis recently won the GRAMMY Award for You Are Not Alone in the Best Americana Album category. The album has become the most successful of her solo career.

2011 GRAMMY Winner Mavis Staples will be featured on Conan O'Brien's show "Conan" on the TBS network Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011. Last season, Mavis performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman and The Colbert Report, as well as being a featured performer at the Jon Stewart / Stephen Colbert Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear in Washington, DC.
Mavis was recently honored with the GRAMMY Award for Best Americana Album for her latest CD, You Are Not Alone, which was produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. Loudon Wainwright III and Pieta Brown are both featured in an episode airing the week after February 18th (the "week after" runs from Friday to the following Friday). David Lindley and John Hammond are both featured in a program airing the week after March 11th and 2011 GRAMMY Winner Mavis Staples is featured in the show airing the week after April 1st. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue's performance was recently re-broadcast in an episode which aired after February 11th.
FEBRUARY 2011: Mavis Staples Wins The GRAMMY for You Are Not Alone (Best Americana Album)
The legendary Mavis Staples has won her first GRAMMY for her album You Are Not Alone in the Best Americana Album category. The album has become the most successful of Mavis' solo career. Upon receiving her GRAMMY, the clearly amazed and grateful Mavis delivered a moving, heartfelt speech. "Oh my God, that was the shock of my life," she said. "My goodness. It's been a long time, a long time coming," and pledging, "I'm going to be around a while. You have not seen the last of me. God is not through with me."
Shortly before her victory, Mavis performed "Wang Dang Doodle" at the GRAMMY Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony, singing alongside Cyndi Lauper, Betty Wright and Maria Muldaur with both Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd featured on guitars.
While this is Mavis' first Grammy win for a CD, she was awarded the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, in recognition of her earlier work with her family, The Staple Singers. She was also nominated last year for her album Live: Hope At The Hideout (Best Contemporary Blues Album); nominated in 2005 for her collaboration with fellow Rosebud artist (for international representation outside North America) Dr. John on "Lay My Burden Down" (Best Gospel Performance) and nominated in 2003 with Bob Dylan (Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals) for their duet "Gotta Change My Way of Thinking."
FEBRUARY 2011: GRAMMY Nominees Mavis Staples and Trombone Shorty to Perform at GRAMMY Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony February 13
GRAMMY nominees Mavis Staples and Trombone Shorty will each perform at the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony, taking place on Sunday, February 13th from 1 - 4pm (PST) at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Mavis and Trombone Shorty will be joining fellow GRAMMY nominees performing at the event including including Buddy Guy, Cyndi Lauper and Kenny Wayne Shepherd among others. Mavis is nominated for Best Americana Album for You Are Not Alone, while Trombone Shorty's Backatown is nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. The event will be streamed live internationally on grammy.com/live and youtube.com/thegrammys beginning at 1 pm (PST) and will remain on GRAMMY.com as video on demand for 30 days following the event. Eleven albums and six singles released by Rosebud artists last year are recognized in the 2010 Village Voice Pazz & Jop Music Critics Poll, which calculated 712 critics' votes for the most important music of the year.
Listed among the year's top singles are: Mavis Staples, "You Are Not Alone" and "Last Train" Bettye LaVette, "Salt of the Earth" Trombone Shorty, "On Your Way Down," "Backatown" and "Something Beautiful"
Also recognized on the album list:
- Elvis Costello's National Ransom, which features Jim Lauderdale and for which Jim co-wrote the song "I Lost You."
- Cyndi Lauper's GRAMMY Nominated Memphis Blues which features Charlie Musselwhite and Allen Toussaint
In addition, Captain Beefheart's "Big Eyed Beans From Venus" reissue was recognized in the year's top singles list. The late Captain Beefheart was a Rosebud artist until his retirement in 1981.
