Duke Robillards latest CD, A Swingin' Session with Duke Robillard is due for release on May 13. His 14th album on the Stony Plain label features special guests Scott Hamilton, Bruce Katz, Doug James and Carl Querfurth. Tracks include a number of timeless jazz standards, as well as some great small group swing and blues tunes. The album focuses on the swing side of Dukes playing, and includes classics like Deed I Do, The Song Is Ended, Them That Got, and When Your Lover Has Gone. Duke is currently nominated by the Blues Music Awards for Best Blues Guitarist, an award he has won 4 times previously. Duke Robillards World Full of Blues (Stony Plain Records) and Tommy Castros Painkiller (Blind Pig) were voted among the Top 10 CDs of 2007 by House of Blues Radio Hour listeners. The January 7th and 8th House of Blues Radio hour featured Robilards "World Of Blues" and Castros "I Roll When I Rock." Tommy Castros "Soul Shaker" was also featured on the International Blues Challenge segment on January 19th and 20th in honor of his past win. House of Blues Radio Hour is hosted weekly by Dan Akroyd. Bettye LaVette, Tommy Castro, Duke Robillard, Ruthie Foster and Muddy Waters were honored with nominations for the 2008 Blues Music Awards just announced. Bettye LaVettes incredible year (Grammy nomination, Pollstar magazine cover story and topping many Best Of 2007 lists) continues with three nominations for Album of the Year (Scene Of The Crime), Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Tommy Castro grabs two nominations for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year (Painkiller) and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Duke Robillard yet again receives a nod for Best Instrumentalist - Guitar. Robillard has won this award an unprecedented four previous times. Ruthie Foster scores her first nomination for Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year. And former Rosebud artist, the late Muddy Waters, is honored with a nomination for Historical Album of the Year (Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down - Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, James Cotton). Rosebud artists Bettye Lavette and Duke Robillard have been nominated for Canada's 11th annual Maple Blues Awards. Selected by a distinguished panel of blues DJs and journalists across Canada, Bettye LaVette and Duke Robillard have been nominated for the B.B. King International Artist award. The Maple Blues Awards are coordinated by the Toronto Blues Society, and you can cast your vote Nov. 3 - Dec. 8 by visiting mapleblues.ca. Winners will be announced at the awards gala in Toronto on Jan. 21, 2008."
The House of Blues Radio Hour will feature Duke Robillard in early October, marking the latest highlight in a major year for the singer/guitarist. Dukes 2006 album, Guitar Groove-A-Rama, was nominated for a Grammy earlier this year and his just released double-disc CD, Duke Robillards World Full of Blues is being met with widespread acclaim. Duke also received the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award from his home state in June. He has been on the road steadily over the past year, touring North America and Europe several times in addition to playing guitar for Tom Waits on his rare late 2006 tour. The State of Rhode Island has announced that Duke Robillard will be honored for Excellence in the Arts at the 2007 Rhode Island Pell Awards. The prestigious award honors exceptional artists who have contributed to the advancement of their chosen form as well as the betterment of the community and world at large. Duke will receive the award at a June 2 ceremony along with fellow Pell recipients Bob Colonna, Mihailo "Misha" Djuric and Olympia Dukakis. Dukes new album, the two-disc Duke Robillards World Full of Blues, is due out in June and he will be touring with his band throughout the year. |
