Rosebud Founder, Mike Kappus, Honored At Wisconsin Music Awards Rosebud founder, Mike Kappus, was just honored with the Presidents award at the Wisconsin Area Music Industry Awards (WAMIs). The awards took place on April 29, 2002 at the Northern Lights Theatre in the Potawatomi casino in Milwaukee. Kappus is a native of Eau Claire, WI and lived in Milwaukee from 1971 to 1976 working simultaneously as an agent, manager, and talent buyer for, among others, Teddys, the citys first showcase club for national talent with a focus on jazz and blues. Kappus moved to San Francisco in 1976 and, started the Rosebud Agency just a few months later. Also honored with the award was Milwaukees renowned Summerfest, now in their 35th year. Mavis Staples Named Phenomenal Woman Of The Year Mavis Staples was named one of the phenomenal women of the year at Chicago's Expo for Today's Black Woman on April 5. Mavis represented the entertainment category. Previous honorees include Cicely Tyson, Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou. Mavis Staples Joins Bonnie Raitt At Chicago Theatre Bonnie Raitt celebrated her second encore at the Chicago Theatre April 4 by bringing Mavis Staples to the stage to join her in singing the Staple Singers hit, "I'll Take You There" . Bonnie is a dear friend of the Staples family and co-produced and sang on a track on Pops Staples' Peace To The Neighborhood CD. Duke Robillard, Epiphone and Harmony-Central Offer Free Guitar and Trip to Handy Awards Duke Robillard is the focus of a contest with Epiphone Guitars and Harmony Central who will fly the winners of the contest to Memphis during Handy Awards Week. In Memphis the winners will meet blues guitar great Duke Robillard, hang out backstage at the W.C. Handy Awards and pick up a brand new Epiphone Emperor Regent guitar. BeauSoleil Continues Dominance In Big Easy Awards Best Cajun Band Category BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet were nominated for Cajun Band of the year in 2002 Big Easy Entertainment Awards hosted by Gambit Weekly. BeauSoleil has won the category 9 times before and rules that don't allow anyone to win more than five consecutive times have provided the rare opportunities for other bands to win the award. The awards will be held Monday, April 22 at the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Riverside New Orleans Hotel. Charlie Musselwhite Plays His Favorites on House of Blues Radio Check out Charlie Musselwhite's program on HOB.com Green Room. The special internet radio segment runs over an hour with Charlie acting as DJ and playing his favorite blues tunes. Featured artists run from major influences to old friends and some who are both. Charlie gives his comments throughout on the songs and the people behind them. HOB Green Room: Charlie Musselwhite >> Mavis Staples/Bob Dylan duet noted in Entertainment Weekly The April 12th issue of Entertainment Weekly reported that Mavis Staples has recorded a rare duet with Bob Dylan for an upcoming spiritual tribute album. Both parties were reluctant to divulge details so well follow their example. The feature was accompanied by a caricature of Bob and Mavis holding hands. Watch for Mavis to add a number of dates this summer performing her gospel show, A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson. The Blind Boys of Alabama featured at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame The Blind Boys of Alabama featuring Clarence Fountain performed on April 13th at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fames fundraising dinner entitled, A Salute to 50 Years of Rock and Roll. The event was hosted by Blind Boys fan, Drew Carey, and also featured Joan Jett, Gerald Levert, and Ian Hunter. Fresh off their grammy win, the Blind Boys have set an intense schedule touring the US and Europe throughout the year. Loudon Wainwright III on CBS Sun Morning April 7, Guesting on Ally McBeal April 15, Loudon's "No Sure Way" on Village Voice Benefit CD and PBS' Life 360 Loudon Wainwright III will be featured, along with Leonard Cohen, on a special segment of CBS Sunday Morning on April 7. Check local schedules for exact air time. Loudon will also be featured as a guest; acting and singing, on Ally McBeal on April 15. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band set 11 consecutive shows during New Orleans' Jazz Fest! The Dirty Dozen will celebrate their 25th anniversary and the release of their new Ropeadope CD, Medicated Magic, with an unprecedented run of 11 late evening shows at The Mermaid Lounge, in New Orleans' famous Warehouse District.
