Charles Brown celebrated his 75th Birthday with a full house sharing the evening November 2 at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. The San Francisco Jazz Festival closed their most successful run ever with a tribute to Charles Brown who was joined on stage by his band, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Ruth Brown, and Jimmy Scott singing in various combinations to honor Charles' 75th and his remarkable career.


Luther Allison honored in Chicago and San Francisco Tribute Events

Recent tribute events honored Luther Allison's memory and helped raise funds to pay his medical bills. An event at Chicago's House of Blues on September 9 featured Jonny Lang, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Dawkins, Otis Rush, Syl Johnson, Mighty Joe Young and The Lonnie Brooks Band among others. The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco was the scene of a tribute on October 13 featuring Blues Legend John Lee Hooker, Luther Allison co-writer and bandleader, James Solberg as well as Joe Louis Walker, Coco Montoya, Sista Monica, Mitch Woods, Little Feat's Richie Hayward and Brian Leighton.

San Francisco became home to a genuine down-home blues joint with the opening of John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Room, on October 3, 1997. Host and proprietor Alex Andreas and John Lee Hooker welcome lovers of Blues & R&B to the renovated club at Fillmore and Geary in San Francisco, directly across from the legendary Fillmore. Formerly known as Jack's, the club had always been Hooker's favorite hangout in San Francisco. Now he has his own custom booth, his name out front and free reign over the classic club.


John Lee Hooker to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Blues legend John Lee Hooker will be honored this September with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hooker is a charter member of the Blues Hall of Fame, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee a two time Grammy Award winner and is reknowned world wide as the most successful blues artist of his time. John Lee Hooker celebrates his 80th birthday on August 22 but he is busier than at any time in the past four years selling out dates from Seattle to San Diego - playing regularly but restricting his travel to the West Coast for now.

John Lee Hooker Looks Ahead with "Don't Look Back"

John Lee Hooker's new CD, Don't Look Back was #1 most added at AAA radio in it's first week of release. The lead track, "Dimples," was produced by Los Lobos who are also featured backing John Lee on the track. Hooker can also be heard on Big Head Todd and The Monsters' latest, sharing vocal chores on their cover of his hit, "Boom Boom." Hooker will play a limited number of shows this spring and summer including The Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles in June.


John Lee Hooker joins Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

John Lee Hooker joined Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers on the last two nights (February 6 & 7) of their 20 night run at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Hooker and his guitarist, Rich Kirch, joined Petty & Co. mid-set for three of Hooker's classics topped by an extended Hooker boogie that had the crowd roaring for more. Hooker's new CD, Don't Look Back, produced by Van Morrison (all but the lead track produced by and featuring Los Lobos) is due out March 4. Morrison duets on four tracks on the record with backing provided by Charles Brown and his bassist and guitarist as well as Kevin Hayes and Jim Pugh, drummer and keyboardist respectively in The Robert Cray Band.


John Lee Hooker - Lifetime of Achievement

John Lee Hooker was honored November 7 with The Blues Foundation's Lifetime Achievment Award. Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, B.B. King, Robert Cray, Luther Allison, Charlie Musselwhite, Ruth Brown and Little Milton were amongst those who paid tribute to the blues legend at B.B. King's club in Los Angeles, CA. President Clinton also sent a letter of congratulations to Mr. Hooker which was read to the audience. Musselwhite and Brown also supported John Lee in a sold-out show at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA the preceding week, as part of the world-renowned San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Speaking of the President, by special invitation, John Lee Hooker performed his classic boogie for President Clinton and a crowd of over 10,000 at Oakland, CA's Jack London Square on October 31. The Democratic rally was one of the President's last California campaign stops before his re-election.

In spite of the Lifetime Achievement Award and talk of retirement, John Lee Hooker continues to create great contemporary and traditional music. John Lee's forthcoming album will be released on pointblank / Virgin Records in February, 1997. Produced by Van Morrison, the album also features special guests Los Lobos (who produced their own guest track), Charles Brown and Gregory Davis and Roger Lewis from The Dirty Dozen who supplyied horns on John's classic, "Blues Before Sunrise."

A belated congratulations to our Grammy Award winners, John Lee Hooker. Hooker is beginning work on his next record and, for the first time in the past few years, will be accepting limited engagBents outside California throughout the Summer. Hooker will be seen and heard on a new Pepsi TV commercial airing nationwide beginning in April. His music will also be heard in the upcoming films, Stealing Beauty and Heaven's Prisoners. John Lee also performs onscreen in The Rich Man's Wife due later this year.
